On Foster Center Road in Foster, a homeowner wanted to trade a tired, dated exterior for the timeless look of natural wood, so Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights replaced the home’s old siding with fresh cedar shake shingles. The upper walls and dormers were re-clad in real cedar, paired with crisp new trim, giving the house the warm, textured character that only natural wood delivers.

Scope of Work

Our siding crew started by removing the old exterior cladding and inspecting the wall sheathing beneath for any moisture or damage that needed correcting before new material went up. We set a proper weather-resistive barrier, then installed the cedar shake shingles course by course with consistent exposure and clean reveal lines. Corners, dormers, and window and door surrounds were detailed with fresh trim, and the crew kept the site clean throughout and hauled away all the old material at the finish.

What We Installed (And Why)

The home was re-sided with natural cedar shake shingles — a premium wood cladding prized for its depth, texture, and the way it weathers gracefully over time. Cedar is naturally durable and dimensionally stable, and when it’s installed with proper spacing and a sound moisture barrier behind it, it breathes and sheds water the way a wood exterior should. Each shingle was set with an even exposure so the finished walls read as clean, uniform rows rather than a patchwork.

Behind the beauty, the fundamentals do the real work. A weather-resistive barrier was installed over the sheathing before the first course went up, giving the wall a secondary line of defense against wind-driven rain. Trim at the corners, dormers, and openings was fit tight to lock out water at every transition, because siding — like roofing — succeeds or fails at its details. The result is an exterior that looks handcrafted and is built to protect the home for years.

Good To Know: How does cedar shake siding hold up in Rhode Island’s climate?

Cedar is a naturally weather-tolerant wood — it resists rot and insects better than most softwoods and stays stable through humidity and temperature swings, which is why it has clad New England homes for centuries. Installed over a proper moisture barrier with room to breathe, cedar shakes shed water and dry out between storms rather than trapping moisture. With periodic care they can be left to silver naturally or kept stained to taste, so homeowners get both durability and a look they can tailor over time.

Why This Approach Works

Good siding is a layered system, not just the board or shingle you see from the street. By tearing off the old cladding, checking the sheathing, and installing a fresh weather-resistive barrier before the cedar went up, we made sure the wall is protected from the inside out. Setting each shake with consistent exposure and tightly detailed trim means water is directed away at every seam and transition. That layered, detail-first approach is what turns a good-looking exterior into one that actually keeps the house dry.
