Velux Sun Tunnels

Natural Light for Interior Spaces — Installed in Rhode Island

Velux Glazing Diagram 1

What Is a Sun Tunnel?

A Velux Sun Tunnel is a tubular skylight that captures sunlight through a roof-mounted dome and channels it through a highly reflective tube into interior spaces below. The result is a warm, natural glow that installs like a recessed ceiling light but delivers genuine daylight. Sun tunnels require a much smaller roof penetration than traditional skylights, making them ideal for spaces where a full skylight is not practical.

Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights installs Velux Sun Tunnels throughout Rhode Island. They are the perfect solution for hallways, bathrooms, closets, laundry rooms, stairwells, and any interior room that lacks access to an exterior wall.

Rigid Sun Tunnels (TMR)

The Velux TMR rigid sun tunnel uses 99% reflective rigid metal tubing to deliver the brightest, whitest light output of any tubular skylight. Available in 10-inch and 14-inch diameters, rigid tunnels can span up to 20 feet from roof to ceiling, though installations of 7 feet or less deliver optimal light transmission.

The standard TMR kit spans 43 inches with a straight run and installs on roofs with slopes from 15 degrees (3:12 pitch) to 60 degrees (20:12 pitch). A frosted dual diffuser at the ceiling reduces condensation and distributes light evenly across the room. Rigid sun tunnels carry a 10-year product warranty and a 20-year warranty on the reflective surface.

Flexible Sun Tunnels (TMF)

The Velux TMF flexible sun tunnel uses 99% reflective flexible mylar tubing that bends and flexes around attic obstructions like beams, ductwork, and wiring. Available in a 14-inch diameter with 8 feet of standard tunnel length, the TMF is the easiest sun tunnel to install in complex roof and attic configurations.

The TMF installs on the same roof slope range as the rigid model (15 to 60 degrees) and delivers excellent light output for installations where a straight path from roof to ceiling is not available. It is the go-to choice when attic obstacles make rigid tunnel installation impractical.

Sun Tunnel Accessories

Electric Light Kit (ZTL 114)

The Velux ZTL 114 electric light kit adds nighttime illumination to your sun tunnel, turning it into a dual-purpose fixture that delivers natural daylight during the day and electric light after dark. The kit installs inside the tunnel just above the diffuser and fits all 10-inch and 14-inch Velux sun tunnel models. Installation by a qualified electrician is required.

Decorative Diffusers

Velux offers a range of micro-engineered decorative diffuser options that replace the standard frosted diffuser. Multiple patterns and styles are available to match your interior decor. Diffusers are easy to swap, allowing you to change the look without any tools or modifications to the tunnel itself.

Solar Night Light

The Velux Solar Night Light uses a built-in solar panel to collect daylight during the day and power LEDs at night, creating a subtle moon-like glow for nighttime navigation. It is perfect for hallways, bathrooms, and closets where a soft ambient light is appreciated after dark — with no wiring or electricity required.

Extension Components

For longer or more complex installations, Velux offers ZTR rigid extension tubes in 24-inch sections, ZTE elbows for changing direction around obstacles, and ZTF flexible extension tubes in 12-foot lengths. These components allow sun tunnel installations in virtually any attic configuration.

Where Sun Tunnels Work Best

Sun tunnels are ideal for interior hallways, bathrooms without exterior walls, closets, laundry rooms, stairwells, and any space where natural light would improve comfort and usability but a traditional skylight is not feasible. They require less structural modification than a skylight, have a smaller roof footprint, and can be routed around existing attic obstacles with the flexible model.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much light does a sun tunnel produce?

A 14-inch Velux sun tunnel produces approximately 80 watts of light equivalent. For installations with 7 feet or less of tunnel length, even the 10-inch model delivers excellent illumination.

Can a sun tunnel go around obstacles in my attic?

Yes. The Velux TMF flexible sun tunnel is specifically designed to bend around beams, ductwork, wiring, and other attic obstructions. Extension elbows and flexible tubes are also available for complex routing.

Do sun tunnels work on cloudy days?

Yes. The 99% reflective tubing captures and channels available daylight even on overcast days. Light output is naturally reduced compared to direct sunlight, but you will still notice a meaningful difference in room brightness.
