A full roof replacement on Musket Road gave this Lincoln home a crisp, uniform crown finished in CertainTeed Landmark architectural shingles in Charcoal Black. From above, the long ridge lines, tidy hips, and clean valleys tell the story of a roof stripped to the deck and rebuilt the right way.

Scope of Work

Our crew began by tearing the old roof off down to the wood deck, then inspected every square foot of sheathing and replaced any boards that had softened over the years. Once we had a sound deck, we installed ice-and-water shield along the eaves, in the valleys, and around every penetration, rolled out synthetic underlayment across the field, and set new drip edge and starter strips. From there the residential roofing system went on course by course, capped with matching ridge shingles over a balanced ventilation setup.

What We Installed (And Why)

The finished surface is CertainTeed Landmark in Charcoal Black, a dimensional asphalt shingle whose deep, near-black tone reads sharp against the home’s chimney and dormer lines. Landmark’s two-piece laminated construction gives the roof depth and shadow that a flat three-tab simply can’t, and the color holds up well under New England sun and shade alike. It’s also a heavier, wind-rated shingle, which matters on a home with the long, exposed ridge lines you can see in the aerial views.

Underneath the shingles is the part that does the quiet work. Ice-and-water membrane at the eaves guards against ice-dam backup during Lincoln winters, valley protection channels heavy runoff where the roof planes meet, and the synthetic underlayment adds a secondary water barrier over the whole deck. New drip edge finishes the perimeter and directs water into the gutters instead of behind the fascia. Ridge venting paired with intake at the eaves keeps air moving through the attic year-round, which protects the decking and helps the shingles reach their full service life rather than aging early from trapped heat and moisture.

Good To Know: Why replace the whole roof instead of patching it?

When a roof reaches the end of its life, spot repairs tend to chase problems from one plane to the next while the underlying deck and old underlayment keep aging. A full tear-off lets us see and correct everything at once — soft decking, tired flashing, worn valleys — and start the clock over on a complete, warrantable system. For a home like this one, that means one predictable investment instead of a string of service calls.

Why This Approach Works

A roof only performs as well as the layers you can’t see. By tearing off to the deck, replacing compromised wood, and building the water-management details back up from scratch, we make sure the beautiful Charcoal Black surface is sitting on a foundation that will support it. Shortcuts like roofing over an existing layer can hide soft decking and worn flashing, and they add weight without adding protection. Balanced ventilation ties it all together, keeping heat and moisture out of the attic so the whole assembly stays dry and stable through every season — which is ultimately what determines how long the roof lasts.
