A ranch home on Hickory Avenue in Middletown received a full new roof in CertainTeed Landmark shingles in Charcoal Black, along with rebuilt chimney flashing and a careful reset of the home’s rooftop solar and skylights. From the air, the dark, uniform surface and clean details show a replacement that respected every feature on the roof.

Scope of Work

We began with a full tear-off to the deck, coordinating around the existing solar array and skylights so nothing was damaged in the process. After inspecting and replacing any weak sheathing, we installed ice-and-water shield at the eaves, valleys, and penetrations, laid synthetic underlayment, and set new drip edge and starter courses. We re-flashed the chimney, re-detailed the skylight curbs and flashing kits, and finished the residential roofing with matching ridge cap over a balanced ventilation system.

What We Installed (And Why)

The finished roof is CertainTeed Landmark in Charcoal Black, a dimensional architectural shingle whose deep tone gives the low-profile ranch a bold, clean top line. Landmark’s laminated build adds shadow and depth across the wide, uninterrupted roof planes, and the dark color pairs naturally with the solar panels and skylights already in place. On a long ranch roofline, that consistency of color and texture is what makes the whole surface look intentional from the ground and the air alike.

The real work on a roof like this is in the details around every opening. We re-flashed the chimney and rebuilt the water seals at each skylight curb, wrapping those transitions in ice-and-water membrane so the most leak-prone spots are fully protected. Every plumbing penetration got a new boot, and fresh drip edge finished the perimeter. The solar array was carefully worked around and reset onto the new surface, and ridge-and-eave ventilation keeps the attic dry beneath it all — a complete, watertight system that accounts for every penetration rather than roofing around them and hoping the old seals hold.

Good To Know: Can you replace a roof that has solar panels and skylights?

Absolutely — it just takes planning. We sequence the tear-off and install around existing solar and skylights so they’re protected throughout, and we treat each penetration as its own waterproofing detail, re-flashing chimneys and rebuilding skylight curb seals as we go. Doing this during a full replacement is the ideal time, because we can wrap those openings in fresh ice-and-water membrane and set them into a brand-new roof rather than a patchwork of old and new.

Why This Approach Works

Skylights, chimneys, and solar mounts are exactly where roofs tend to leak, so a replacement that ignores them only trades one problem for another. By re-flashing the chimney, resealing every skylight curb, and carefully resetting the solar array onto a fresh underlayment system, we made sure the new Charcoal Black roof is watertight at every opening — not just across the open field. Re-using old, brittle flashing or curb seals under new shingles is a shortcut that shows up as a stain on the ceiling a year later. Handling those details properly during the install is what makes a feature-heavy roof genuinely reliable for the long term.
