On Cottrell Road, a weathered cedar-shingle home in Saunderstown earned a full new roof in CertainTeed Landmark shingles in Colonial Slate, plus a rebuilt chimney crown. The soft gray blend settles beautifully over the home’s natural shingle siding, giving the whole exterior a fresh but timeless look.

Scope of Work

We stripped the existing roof to the deck and worked across the sheathing, replacing any boards that had weakened before moving forward. With a solid deck in place, we laid ice-and-water shield at the eaves, valleys, and penetrations, covered the field in synthetic underlayment, and set new drip edge and starter courses. We also rebuilt the chimney crown and reset its flashing so that vulnerable transition sheds water cleanly. The Landmark residential roofing shingles then went on, finished with a vented ridge cap.

What We Installed (And Why)

The new surface is CertainTeed Landmark in Colonial Slate, a multi-tonal gray that mixes lighter and darker granules to mimic the depth of natural slate. On a cedar-shingle home like this one, that muted palette complements the weathered siding rather than competing with it, keeping the coastal character intact while modernizing the protection above. It’s a look that ages gracefully — the blend reads as warm and textured rather than stark, which suits an older shingle-style home in a village setting.

Just as important as the shingle was the chimney work. A cracked or crumbling crown lets water into the masonry and down along the flashing, so we rebuilt the crown and re-detailed the step and counter-flashing where the chimney meets the roof. We also renewed the pipe boots and any tired penetrations at the same time, since those small components tend to fail first on a coastal home. Combined with ice-and-water protection at the eaves and valleys and a synthetic underlayment across the deck, the home now has a fully integrated water barrier from ridge to edge.

Good To Know: Why does the chimney crown matter on a new roof?

The chimney is one of the most common places a roof leaks, and the crown — the concrete cap at the very top — is often the culprit. When it cracks, water seeps into the masonry and works its way down to the flashing and deck below. Rebuilding the crown and re-flashing the chimney at the same time as the roof means we close off that entire path in one visit, instead of leaving a weak spot beneath a brand-new roof.

Why This Approach Works

A roof replacement is the right moment to address every water entry point at once, and the chimney is at the top of that list. By pairing a full CertainTeed Landmark system with a rebuilt crown and fresh flashing, we make sure the details that usually fail first are handled with the same care as the wide-open field. Leaving an old crown or worn flashing beneath a new roof is one of the most common ways a beautiful install still ends up leaking a season or two later. On a coastal home that takes wind-driven rain from every direction, that attention to transitions is what keeps the interior dry for the long haul.
