A Wapping Road homeowner in Portsmouth called Pinnacle when their ranch’s roof had aged past the point where another repair made sense. On Aquidneck Island, a worn roof and steady coastal weather are a risky combination, so the crew planned a full replacement with CertainTeed architectural shingles — a permanent fix rather than one more patch on a tired surface.
Scope of Work
The crew stripped the old shingles down to the deck and inspected the sheathing across every plane, replacing any board that had softened over the years. From there the roof was rebuilt as a complete system: ice-and-water shield at the eaves, valleys, and penetrations, synthetic underlayment across the field, drip edge along the perimeter, and new starter strips to lock the first course. Pipe boots and vents were reset, flashing was detailed at the transitions, and the roof repair finished with fresh ridge caps and a full-property cleanup.
What We Installed (And Why)
The new roof is CertainTeed Landmark in Moire Black, a rich, near-black tone with subtle tonal movement that keeps the color from looking flat. On a long, low ranch roofline the dark shingle reads clean and contemporary, and Landmark’s dual-layer laminated construction gives the wide, exposed planes the wind and impact resistance an island home needs. It is a shingle chosen as much for durability as for looks.
The lasting value, though, is in the layers underneath. Ice-and-water membrane seals the eaves and valleys where wind-driven rain and winter ice do their worst; synthetic underlayment adds a full secondary barrier over the deck; and carefully detailed flashing and reset penetrations keep water channeled off the roof rather than seeping behind it. Balanced ventilation lets the attic breathe so heat and moisture don’t shorten the roof’s life from below. On a low, wide ranch the roof presents a lot of surface to the elements, so getting every one of these layers right across the whole footprint is what separates a roof that merely looks new from one that will still be watertight many winters from now.

Good To Know: Why does a coastal roof age faster?
Homes near the water like this one face a tougher mix than inland roofs — stronger, saltier wind, more sun, and rapid temperature swings that flex the shingles day after day. That accelerates granule loss and drying out, which is why a coastal roof can reach the end of its life sooner than the calendar suggests. A full replacement with a wind-rated architectural shingle and a fully sealed underlayment system is the surest way to get long, dependable service in that environment. It also means the vulnerable eaves and valleys — the spots where a coastal roof usually starts to leak first — are sealed with membrane from the outset rather than relying on shingles alone.
Why This Approach Works
Going down to the deck lets the crew fix what a surface repair can’t reach — soft sheathing, tired flashing, and unsealed transitions. Rebuilding the roof as one integrated system, from ice-and-water membrane to ridge cap, means the finished shingle sits on a foundation engineered to keep water out. On an exposed coastal ranch, that complete approach is what turns a new roof into decades of protection. A shingle is only as good as the deck and underlayment it sits on, and by rebuilding all of it together the crew removed the weak links that cause premature failure.
