This older home in the Saunderstown section of North Kingstown needed a major update, not a cosmetic one. Under the old shingles sat spaced sheathing boards with one- to two-inch gaps — original construction that no longer meets today’s building code. Scope of Work

After stripping the roof, the crew installed new plywood decking over the spaced boards — the code-required solid surface a modern shingle roof needs. Before plywood, builders sheathed roofs with individual boards spaced an inch or two apart — fine for the wood shingles of that era, which needed airflow to dry. Asphalt shingles are different: they require continuous, solid support under every square inch, and building code requires it. If your older home still has its original spaced boards, plan for new decking as part of any roof replacement — it is the foundation everything else depends on.
