Choosing the right shingle color for a cedar-sided home is a decision that pays off for decades — and the homeowner on Sloop Street in Jamestown, RI made a choice that will only improve with time. The existing roof had reached end of life, with curled and brittle shingles across multiple slopes. Pinnacle replaced it with CertainTeed Landmark PRO in Max Def Colonial Slate — a blue-gray blend specifically selected because it complements natural cedar shake siding both when the wood is fresh and as it weathers to its characteristic silver-gray patina. As the cedar ages, the cool tones of Colonial Slate become an even closer visual match, creating the kind of timeless curb appeal that defines Jamestown’s architectural identity.
Scope of Work
The Sloop Street roof presented the steep pitches and complex geometry typical of Jamestown’s shingle-style homes. Our crew began with a full tear-off of the old three-tab shingles, working from the ridge down across each slope. The original underlayment — a standard 15-pound felt — had dried out and become brittle in multiple areas, particularly on the south-facing slopes where direct UV exposure accelerates felt degradation. The deck was structurally sound throughout, which is a welcome finding on a coastal property where moisture intrusion can quietly damage plywood for years before shingles show visible symptoms.
We installed CertainTeed WinterGuard ice and water shield along all eave lines extending a minimum of 24 inches past the interior wall line, in every valley, and at the sidewall transition where the roof meets the dormer faces. The sidewall flashing at each dormer was built with new aluminum step flashing, lapped correctly with the adjacent shingle courses and integrated with the cedar siding’s existing drainage plane. CertainTeed DiamondDeck synthetic underlayment covered the remaining deck, and new painted aluminum drip edge was installed at every eave and rake, color-matched to the dark trim. CertainTeed SwiftStart starter strips were applied at eaves and rakes before the Landmark PRO field shingles were installed. Every pipe boot and plumbing vent received a new neoprene collar. The project concluded with CertainTeed Shadow Ridge hip and ridge caps, providing a dimensionally matched finish along the ridgeline and a continuous flow of exhaust ventilation.
What We Installed (And Why)
CertainTeed Landmark PRO was the right choice for this home because the Max Def Colonial Slate color technology delivers the multi-tonal depth that a simple solid-color shingle cannot achieve. The “Max Def” designation refers to CertainTeed’s enhanced color process, which applies darker shadow bands beneath a randomized surface granule layer — producing visible dimension that mimics natural slate when viewed from the ground. On a home with natural cedar shake siding, the roof color must be sophisticated enough to stand alongside the organic variation of real wood, and Colonial Slate delivers that.
From a performance standpoint, Landmark PRO carries 130 mph wind resistance, a Class A fire rating, and CertainTeed’s SureStart warranty that covers materials and labor for the first five years with no deductible. The Integrity Roof System approach means the ice and water shield, synthetic underlayment, starter strips, field shingles, and ridge caps all carry CertainTeed’s system warranty — a level of protection that only applies when all components come from the same manufacturer and are installed per specification. CertainTeed’s installation guide for Landmark PRO requires a minimum 4-nail pattern in the specified nailing zone for standard wind exposure, and a 6-nail pattern for high-wind zones. Jamestown qualifies as a high-wind exposure, so our crew used the enhanced 6-nail pattern on every shingle to meet both manufacturer requirements and local wind conditions.

Good To Know
The underlayment beneath your shingles is invisible once the roof is done, but it may be the most important weather barrier in the entire system. Traditional 15-pound asphalt felt has been used for over a century, and it still works — but synthetic underlayment outperforms it in every category that matters in Rhode Island. Synthetic products like CertainTeed DiamondDeck are lighter, lay flatter on the deck (eliminating wrinkles that can telegraph through shingles), resist tearing during installation, and do not absorb moisture. That last point is critical in New England where a partially completed roof may be exposed overnight to rain or dew before shingles are installed. Felt paper absorbs water, swells, and wrinkles — then dries unevenly, leaving a lumpy substrate. Synthetic underlayment sheds water completely and dries flat. In Jamestown, where morning fog rolls off the bay through much of the year and afternoon rain showers are unpredictable from April through October, having an underlayment that can handle unexpected moisture without compromising the final roof surface is not a luxury — it is a practical necessity.
Why This Approach Works
Matching the enhanced 6-nail pattern to Jamestown’s wind exposure is not a precaution — it is a direct application of the manufacturer’s installation specifications for coastal zones. Each additional nail per shingle increases the uplift resistance of the entire roof plane, and in a location where sustained winds off Narragansett Bay can exceed 60 mph during nor’easters, those two extra nails per shingle across thousands of shingles add up to measurably greater holding power. Combined with the CertainTeed SwiftStart starter strip at the eaves — where wind uplift pressure is highest — this roof is engineered to resist the specific forces this island location delivers.
