This Gothic Revival farmhouse in Richmond — pointed gable, ornamental trim, and a century-plus of history — needed its roof rebuilt from the structure up. Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights installed a new plywood deck over the original boards, the CertainTeed Integrity Roof System with Landmark PRO shingles in Moire Black, and new VELUX skylights to replace the aging units.

Scope of Work

The old roof and skylights came off together. With the original spaced boards exposed, the crew cut and installed new plywood sheathing across the entire roof, fastened to the rafters — the solid, code-required surface modern shingles demand. Then the system: waterproofing underlayment at eaves and valleys, water-resistant underlayment across the field, starters, Landmark PRO shingles in Moire Black, matching caps, and new VELUX skylights flashed into the finished field.

What We Installed (And Why)

CertainTeed Landmark PRO improves on the standard Landmark — the shingle a leading consumer publication has repeatedly named a best buy — with a heavier build and Max Def color depth, plus a Class A fire rating, 110 MPH wind warranty, StreakFighter algae resistance, and CertainTeed’s lifetime limited warranty with SureStart protection.

Moire Black is a Max Def blend of deep blacks and charcoal — dramatic against pale farmhouse siding, and historically right: dark roofs are what Gothic Revival houses were drawn with. The color gives this house its silhouette back.

Good To Know: Can an old farmhouse take a modern roof system?

Yes — if you respect the order of operations. Historic homes usually carry board decks that have done a century of duty; the modern system starts with new plywood over those boards, which preserves the original structure while giving shingles the solid grip they require. From there, waterproofing membranes and architectural shingles actually protect an old house better than anything its builders had — the trick is never to skip the deck.

Why This Approach Works

Everything on this project compounds: solid new decking makes every fastener count, the membrane layers guard a roofline full of valleys and dormer intersections, and skylights replaced mid-project cost a fraction of a later retrofit. An old house rebuilt in the right sequence stops being fragile.

Richmond, RI

Richmond is western Rhode Island at its best — farmland, forest, and villages like Wyoming and Carolina strung along the Wood River.
