A home on Helme Road in Kingston, RI needed more than new shingles — the homeowner wanted to transform how natural light entered the kitchen and bathroom while replacing an aging roof that had seen better days. Pinnacle Roofing delivered both: a full CertainTeed Landmark PRO roof replacement in Max Def Colonial Slate paired with new VELUX fixed skylights that flood the interior with daylight year-round. As Rhode Island’s only VELUX 5-Star Skylight Specialist, Pinnacle is uniquely qualified to integrate skylight installations into a roofing project so both systems work together as one weathertight assembly.

Scope of Work

This Kingston project required careful coordination between two trades — roofing and skylight installation — executed in the correct sequence to maintain waterproofing integrity at every stage. We began with a complete tear-off of the existing shingles to inspect the deck condition. The plywood was in serviceable shape with no significant delamination, though we replaced several sheets near the skylight openings where previous installations had left oversized cuts in the decking.

With the deck prepped, we laid CertainTeed WinterGuard ice and water shield at all eave lines, valleys, and around every skylight rough opening. The skylight openings received additional WinterGuard lapped up the curb faces to create a continuous waterproof barrier from deck to frame. CertainTeed DiamondDeck synthetic underlayment covered the remaining field. We then installed the VELUX fixed skylights with factory-supplied EDL stepped flashing kits — these pre-engineered kits use formed aluminum corners that eliminate the field-bent joints where leaks most commonly originate. Each skylight was shimmed level, fastened to the framing, and sealed with the manufacturer’s specified continuous flashing method that integrates with the surrounding shingle courses. CertainTeed Landmark PRO shingles in Max Def Colonial Slate were then installed across the full roof surface, carefully cutting and weaving courses around each skylight flashing assembly. New pipe boots, ridge ventilation, and Shadow Ridge hip and ridge caps completed the installation.

What We Installed (And Why)

The homeowner chose CertainTeed Landmark PRO — the premium tier of CertainTeed’s architectural shingle line — in Max Def Colonial Slate, a multi-toned blend that echoes the natural variation of quarried slate. Landmark PRO carries a 130 mph wind resistance rating and CertainTeed’s maximum limited lifetime warranty when installed as part of the Integrity Roof System. The Max Def color technology uses deeper shadow bands and richer pigments to create visible dimension from street level, and Colonial Slate’s blue-gray tones complement the home’s blue clapboard siding naturally.

The VELUX fixed skylights were selected for rooms where ventilation was already adequate — the kitchen and bathroom — so the goal was purely to maximize natural light. VELUX’s FS-series fixed units use a Low-E3 glass pane with argon gas fill that delivers a U-factor of 0.27, meaning they insulate nearly as well as the surrounding wall while transmitting visible light at 55% — enough to replace electric lighting during all daylight hours. Every VELUX skylight installed by a certified specialist like Pinnacle carries the VELUX No Leak Warranty, which covers both the unit and the installation for 10 years — a guarantee only available through factory-trained installers.

Good To Know

Skylight placement is about much more than cutting a hole in the roof. Sun tracking determines which rooms benefit most — south-facing skylights deliver the most consistent daylight through all seasons, while north-facing units provide soft, even light without direct glare or heat gain. In this Kingston home, the kitchen skylight faces south, capturing morning and midday light that makes the countertop workspace usable without flipping a switch. The bathroom unit faces east, catching gentle morning sun that warms the space early and fades by afternoon. VELUX recommends matching skylight placement to room purpose: kitchens and living areas benefit from south or west exposure for maximum light hours, while bedrooms and bathrooms often perform better with north or east orientation to avoid overheating. Kingston sits at the edge of southern Rhode Island’s coastal plain, and the mature tree canopy on Helme Road creates dappled shade — another factor our team evaluated before recommending exact roof positions to balance light penetration with seasonal shading.

Why This Approach Works

Combining a roof replacement with skylight installation in a single project ensures the flashing around each unit is built into the shingle system from the start — not cut in afterward. When skylights are added to an existing roof, the surrounding shingles must be lifted, cut, and resealed, creating potential failure points at every disturbance. By installing the VELUX units during the roof replacement, every course of Landmark PRO shingles was woven into the skylight flashing as the roof progressed upward, producing a continuous waterproof envelope with zero retrofit compromises.
