This Tiverton roof replacement came with a twist: a koi pond sat directly below the work area. Before a single shingle came off, Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights built a protective structure over the pond to keep the fish safe from falling debris — then installed CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex shingles in Weathered Wood.
Scope of Work
First came the pond shelter — a temporary protective structure spanning the water feature so tear-off debris never touched it. With the pond secured, the crew completed a full tear-off of the old shingles and rebuilt the roof from the deck up: fresh underlayment, new drip edge and starter strip, NorthGate ClimateFlex field shingles in Weathered Wood, and matching hip and ridge caps.
What We Installed (And Why)
CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex is a polymer-modified asphalt shingle — SBS rubberizing technology makes it measurably more flexible and impact-tolerant than standard asphalt. It carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating (the highest), a Class A fire rating, a 110 MPH wind-resistance warranty, StreakFighter algae resistance, and CertainTeed’s lifetime limited transferable warranty. For an exposed East Bay location that takes coastal wind and the occasional hailstorm, that flexibility is real protection, not a spec-sheet nicety.
Weathered Wood is one of NorthGate’s signature Max Def colors — a blend of soft browns and grays that mimics naturally aged cedar. It suits Tiverton’s farm-coast character perfectly: the multi-tonal granules give the roof depth and a settled, been-there-forever look that flatters traditional homes.

Good To Know: How do you protect a koi pond during a roof tear-off?
A roof tear-off sheds hundreds of pounds of debris, and everything below the eaves is in the fall zone — gardens, decks, AC condensers, and yes, koi ponds. A good crew plans protection before demolition starts: tarps and plywood shielding for plantings and fixtures, catch systems along the eaves, and purpose-built covers for anything that can’t be moved. If your home has landscape features you care about, ask how they’ll be protected — the answer tells you a lot about the contractor.
Why This Approach Works
Polymer-modified shingles like NorthGate ClimateFlex cost a little more than standard architectural shingles, but they earn it where weather is unforgiving. The SBS-modified asphalt stays flexible in cold snaps, resists cracking, and shrugs off impacts that would bruise or fracture conventional shingles. Paired with a full tear-off and a complete CertainTeed system underneath, it’s a roof built for decades of Sakonnet weather.

Tiverton, RI
Tiverton stretches along the Sakonnet River on Rhode Island’s East Bay — a town of coastal farmland, stone walls, and historic villages like Tiverton Four Corners. Homes here take salt air and open coastal wind that inland houses never see, which makes impact-rated, flexible shingles a smart match for the setting. Pinnacle has completed many projects throughout Tiverton and the East Bay. See our Tiverton roofing page for more on how we serve this community.
