Scope of Work
The project set four skylights into the steep cedar roof that forms most of the house. Each VELUX unit was placed to light the rooms and loft spaces beneath the A-frame’s slopes, and each was flashed with its engineered metal kit into the cedar-shingle courses, with ice-and-water membrane lapped up the curb, so the openings are watertight on a steep roof that sheds a great deal of water. Cedar-shingle roofs take particular care to flash correctly around a penetration, and getting that right on four skylights is what lets the A-frame gain daylight without gaining leaks. Inside, the skylights open the tall, sloped ceilings to the sky, lighting spaces a wall window on an A-frame simply cannot reach.
What We Installed (And Why)
The A-frame is a beautiful, distinctive design with one built-in problem: it is mostly roof. The two great slopes that give an A-frame its shape come almost all the way to the ground, which leaves only the small gable ends — front and back — to hold windows. That means the interior, especially the upper loft levels tucked under the peak, can be dramatically short on daylight, because there is simply no wall to put a window in. Skylights are the answer, and on an A-frame they are less a luxury than a necessity: set into the great sloping roof, they bring daylight to exactly the spaces the design starves of it. Four VELUX units here light the home along its slopes, and because they are VELUX they are flashed with engineered metal kits rather than caulk, so they stay dry.
