This Johnston home needed an emergency roof replacement, and its mansard-style design made the job anything but routine. Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights replaced the whole system with GAF Timberline HDZ in Charcoal — and corrected a previous contractor’s shortcut that had put vinyl siding where roofing belonged.

Scope of Work

A mansard roof has two pitches on every side, with the lower slope nearly vertical — it creates real living space upstairs, but it also multiplies the roofing details. The crew stripped both pitch levels, then found the bigger problem: where a past addition met the original house, the old contractor had run vinyl siding across a roof transition. Vinyl siding is engineered for vertical walls only — on a slope it channels water behind itself. We removed it, rebuilt the transition with proper underlayment and flashing, and shingled the entire roof in Timberline HDZ.

Good To Know: Can vinyl siding ever be used on a roof slope?

No. Shingles can be installed on pitches down to about 2:12 (with special underlayment provisions), but vinyl siding is made exclusively for vertical walls — its laps and fastening are designed to shed rain falling past it, not water running over it. If a previous contractor put siding on any sloped surface of your roof, water is very likely getting behind it. It should be replaced with true roofing material.
