West Greenwich, RI Roof Replacement in CertainTeed Landmark Colonial Slate on a Wooded Ranch

Pinnacle makes every project affordable with monthly financing options, including 0% interest for 18 months.

On Bates Trail in West Greenwich, this cedar-shake ranch had reached the end of its old roof’s service life and needed a clean, full replacement built to shrug off the heavy sun, wind, and wet snow that come with living out among the trees. The homeowner wanted a shingle with real depth of color and a proven track record, so we installed a CertainTeed Landmark roof in Colonial Slate that gives the low, horizontal profile of the home a richer, more finished look. A full tear-off let us inspect and correct the deck before a single new shingle went down.

Scope of Work

The crew stripped the roof completely to the wood deck, cleared every old fastener, and walked the sheathing to find and replace any boards that had softened over the years. From there we built the system back up in order: ice-and-water shield along the eaves, in the valleys, and around every penetration; a synthetic underlayment across the field in place of old-style felt; and new drip edge on the rakes and eaves. Starter strips were set at the perimeter for wind resistance, the CertainTeed Landmark shingles were installed across the field, and the job finished with matching ridge cap and balanced attic ventilation. See our full residential roofing process for how each layer works together.

What We Installed (And Why)

CertainTeed Landmark is a dual-layer architectural shingle, which means two laminated layers instead of the single layer of a basic three-tab. That extra thickness does two jobs at once: it stands up better to New England’s freeze-thaw cycles and gusty weather, and it casts the kind of dimensional shadow lines that make a roof look like a deliberate design choice rather than a commodity. On a long, low ranch roof that the eye takes in all at once, that texture matters.

Colonial Slate was the right color call here. Its blend of cool grays and charcoal reads like natural slate from the street and sits beautifully against the warm tones of cedar shake siding and a wooded backdrop. It is a color that stays handsome year-round in West Greenwich, whether the yard is green in summer or bare in the middle of winter.

Good To Know: Why does a full tear-off beat roofing over the old shingles?

Layering new shingles over old ones hides exactly what you most need to see. On this ranch, taking the roof down to the deck let us confirm the sheathing was sound, replace anything that was not, and lay a continuous ice-and-water and underlayment system directly on clean wood. That means the new Landmark roof is sealing to a known-good surface, not to a decades-old layer that could be trapping moisture or hiding rot. It costs a little more up front and it is the only way to give a roof its full rated lifespan.

Why This Approach Works

A roof is a system, not just the shingles you see. By pairing a quality architectural shingle with a complete waterproofing package underneath it, sealed eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment, fresh drip edge, and balanced intake and exhaust ventilation, we build a roof that manages both water shedding off the top and moisture and heat inside the attic. That balance is what protects the deck, keeps energy bills in check, and lets the Landmark shingles perform the way CertainTeed rates them for the full life of the roof.

Why Pinnacle

Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights has served Rhode Island homeowners since 2012, and we are a CertainTeed ShingleMaster Premier contractor, the highest residential credential CertainTeed offers, so a Landmark roof like this one is installed exactly to spec by an approved installer. That combination is why West Greenwich families trust us with a once-in-a-generation project like a full roof replacement.

West Greenwich, RI

West Greenwich is one of Rhode Island’s most rural and wooded communities, where homes sit on generous lots surrounded by pine and hardwood, and roofs take a real beating from sun, wind, and the debris that comes with tree cover. That setting makes a durable, well-ventilated roof more than a cosmetic upgrade. We are proud to serve homeowners across West Greenwich with roofs built for exactly these conditions.
