An Arnold Street home in Lincoln needed a full roof replacement, and the homeowners wanted a classic, timeless look paired with a smarter ventilation setup than the aging roof it replaced. We installed CertainTeed Landmark shingles in Moire Black and rebuilt the attic airflow with Lomanco intake vents — a combination that delivers deep, crisp curb appeal and a roof that actually breathes the way it should.

Scope of Work

The project started with a complete tear-off to the deck so we could inspect the sheathing and swap out any damaged boards. We ran ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, covered the field in synthetic underlayment, and set new drip edge and starter strips before the shingles went on. The Landmark shingles were installed with new pipe boots and flashing, then capped with ridge shingles over a continuous exhaust vent. The key upgrade was at the bottom of the system: we added Lomanco intake vents to feed fresh air in low so the ridge could pull stale, hot air out — the balanced-ventilation detail that makes the whole residential roofing assembly perform.

What We Installed (And Why)

CertainTeed Landmark in Moire Black is a dimensional architectural shingle with a Class A fire rating, strong wind resistance, and StreakFighter algae protection. Moire Black is one of the most versatile colors CertainTeed makes — a true, layered black with subtle gray movement in the granule blend that frames almost any siding or trim color cleanly. It’s the kind of roof that never looks dated.

The ventilation side is where this job earns its keep. A roof needs balanced intake and exhaust to work: exhaust vents at the ridge can only remove as much air as the intake vents let in near the eaves. Many older homes are exhaust-heavy and starved for intake, which traps heat and moisture in the attic. Adding Lomanco intake vents fixed that imbalance here, giving the attic a steady low-to-high airflow that helps manage summer heat, discourages winter ice dams, and lets the new shingles run cooler and last longer.

Good To Know: Why does attic ventilation matter as much as the shingles?

Because heat and trapped moisture are what quietly age a roof from the inside out. Without enough intake air at the eaves, an attic bakes in summer — cooking the shingles from below and driving up cooling bills — and holds damp air in winter that can feed mold and ice dams. Balancing intake and exhaust, the way we did with Lomanco intake vents here, keeps air moving so the deck stays dry and the shingles stay within their designed temperature range. A great shingle on a poorly vented roof simply won’t reach its full lifespan.

Why This Approach Works

Pairing a premium shingle with a corrected ventilation system treats the roof as one connected assembly instead of just a new surface. The full tear-off gave us a clean, sound deck to build on; the ice-and-water shield and underlayment sealed the vulnerable areas; and the balanced Lomanco intake and ridge exhaust set up airflow that protects everything underneath. That’s how you get a roof that looks sharp on day one and keeps performing for decades, rather than one that photographs well but struggles in the attic.
