On Gervais Street in Coventry, this ranch needed its roof brought back to health — worn shingles across the main planes and a brick chimney whose flashing and mortar had begun letting weather slip past. We restored it with CertainTeed Landmark shingles in the Resawn Shake color, chosen to echo the look of hand-split cedar while giving the homeowner the durability and low upkeep of a modern architectural shingle. The chimney was re-detailed at the same time so the most common leak point on the roof was closed for good.

Scope of Work

We stripped the failing areas to the deck, checked the sheathing and replaced any that had softened, and rebuilt the waterproofing from the bottom up: ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment across the field, and new drip edge. Starter strip went down along the perimeter, the Landmark Resawn Shake shingles were installed across the slopes, and ridge cap finished the peaks. At the chimney we set fresh step-flashing and counterflashing and addressed the masonry so the roof-to-brick transition sheds water cleanly. You can see the full range of options on our roof repair page.

What We Installed (And Why)

Landmark is CertainTeed’s most popular architectural shingle for good reason: its two-piece laminated construction stands up to New England wind and weather while carrying a strong manufacturer warranty. Compared to the old three-tab shingles it replaces, Landmark lies flatter, resists lifting, and gives a roof a dimensional, textured surface instead of a flat sheet.

The Resawn Shake color is the detail that ties this house together. Its blend of soft grays and browns mimics weathered cedar shakes, so the ranch gets the warm, natural roofline of wood without the splitting, moss, and constant maintenance real shake demands. The chimney work is the unsung hero here — rebuilding the flashing and mortar joints at that penetration is what keeps a good-looking roof from leaking where the masonry meets the shingles.

Good To Know: Why Do So Many Roof Leaks Start at the Chimney?

Because the chimney is where two very different materials meet — rigid brick and a flexible roof surface — and the metal flashing bridging them takes a beating from expansion, freeze-thaw, and years of runoff. When old flashing corrodes or mortar joints erode, water sneaks into the gap and shows up as a stain on the ceiling below. That’s why we treat the chimney as its own project during a repair: new step-flashing, new counterflashing tucked into the masonry, and sound mortar, rather than just smearing sealant over the problem.

Why This Approach Works

A roof is only as watertight as its weakest transition. By rebuilding the underlayment layers before re-shingling and giving the chimney a full flashing and mortar detail rather than a quick patch, we fixed both the surface and the seam. The result is a roof that not only looks like fresh cedar shake from the street but actually keeps the rain where it belongs — outside — for decades to come.
