New construction is where everything comes together from scratch — no tearoffs, no surprises behind old sheathing, just clean framing and the opportunity to build every exterior system the right way from day one. This project at 20 Puritan Avenue in Barrington gave us exactly that opportunity. The builder brought Pinnacle in to handle the full exterior envelope: roofing, skylights, sun tunnels, siding, and flat roof membrane — all coordinated under one contractor.

When a builder trusts one crew to handle multiple systems, the result is tighter integration and fewer scheduling conflicts. Every flashing detail, every transition between the sloped roof and the flat sections, every skylight curb — it all gets built by the same team that understands how each component connects to the next. That continuity matters, and it shows in the finished product.

The homeowner ended up with a striking exterior anchored by CertainTeed’s Landmark Premium shingle in Moire Black, VELUX fixed skylights and sun tunnels for natural light throughout the home, James Hardie Panel siding for low-maintenance durability, and EPDM membrane on the flat roof sections. Every system was installed to manufacturer specifications and designed to work together for decades.

Scope of Work

This was a ground-up, multi-system installation on new construction. The primary roof areas received the full CertainTeed Integrity Roof System — a layered approach that pairs Landmark Premium shingles with matched underlayment, starter strip, ridge caps, and intake ventilation components. All flat roof sections were sealed with EPDM rubber membrane, fully adhered and detailed at every penetration and wall transition. Two VELUX fixed skylights were installed on the sloped roof planes, and sun tunnels were routed to bring daylight into interior spaces that would otherwise rely entirely on electric lighting.

On the siding side, we installed James Hardie HardiePanel vertical siding — a fiber cement product engineered for coastal New England conditions. Every seam between roof, skylight, siding, and flat membrane was integrated with proper step flashing, counter-flashing, and sealant detailing. Working as the single exterior contractor meant zero finger-pointing between trades and one warranty path for the builder and homeowner.

What We Installed (And Why)

The CertainTeed Landmark Premium is the higher-tier option in CertainTeed’s architectural shingle lineup — heavier than the standard Landmark PRO, with a thicker profile that creates deeper shadow lines and carries an extended warranty. In Moire Black, it delivers a clean, high-contrast look against the Hardie Panel siding. The full Integrity Roof System underneath means every layer — from the WinterGuard ice and water shield at eaves and valleys to the DiamondDeck synthetic underlayment across the field — is CertainTeed-matched, which qualifies the installation for the strongest warranty CertainTeed offers. Class A fire rating and StreakFighter algae resistance come standard.

The VELUX fixed skylights flood upper-floor rooms with natural light without the complexity of operable units — no motors, no seals to maintain, just a fixed, insulated glass unit with a low-E coating. The VELUX sun tunnels serve a different purpose: they channel daylight through a reflective tube from the roof surface down into interior rooms — hallways, bathrooms, closets — where a traditional skylight isn’t structurally practical. On new construction, routing sun tunnels is straightforward since the framing is open and accessible.

The Hardie Panel siding was chosen for its resistance to moisture, insects, and coastal salt air — all relevant factors in Barrington. Fiber cement won’t rot, warp, or delaminate the way wood-based products can in this climate. The EPDM membrane on the flat roof sections provides a proven, single-ply waterproofing solution with a long service life. EPDM is particularly well-suited to low-slope applications where standing water and thermal cycling are constant factors.

Good To Know

On new construction, hiring one contractor for roofing, skylights, siding, and flat roof membrane eliminates the coordination gaps that happen when three or four separate trades are involved. When Pinnacle handles the full exterior envelope, every flashing transition between roof and wall, every skylight curb, and every membrane termination is detailed by the same crew — which means no ambiguity about who’s responsible for weatherproofing at each junction. For builders, it simplifies scheduling and creates a single point of accountability. For homeowners, it means one contractor standing behind the entire exterior system.

Why This Approach Works

The combination of CertainTeed’s Integrity Roof System, VELUX daylighting products, Hardie fiber cement siding, and EPDM flat roofing creates an exterior that addresses every exposure this home will face — UV, wind-driven rain, ice, salt air, and thermal cycling. Each product was selected for its specific application: Landmark Premium for the steep-slope roof areas where aesthetics and longevity matter most, EPDM for the low-slope sections where ponding resistance is critical, Hardie Panel where moisture and insect resistance outperform wood alternatives, and VELUX skylights and sun tunnels where natural light reduces energy costs and improves livability. The result is a cohesive system, not a collection of unrelated products bolted onto the same structure.

Why Pinnacle

With over 100 five-star Google reviews and an A+ BBB rating, our track record speaks for itself.

Barrington, RI

Barrington sits along the upper Narragansett Bay with significant coastal exposure — salt air, nor’easters, and humidity levels that accelerate deterioration on substandard materials. The products installed on this home were selected specifically for that environment: algae-resistant shingles, fiber cement siding that won’t rot or swell, EPDM membrane rated for ponding conditions, and insulated VELUX glass units designed for cold-climate performance. Pinnacle has completed numerous roofing, skylight, and siding projects across Barrington and understands what this coastal climate demands from every exterior system.
