Foster, RI Roof in CertainTeed NorthGate Weathered Wood with Solar-Venting VELUX Skylights

Like most Pinnacle roofing projects, the work was completed in a single day — minimizing disruption for the homeowner.

Pinnacle makes every project affordable with monthly financing options, including 0% interest for 18 months.

Out on Central Pike in Foster, this home needed a new roof that could handle the cold, wind, and snow load of Rhode Island’s most rural western hills, and the owner also wanted more natural light drawn down into the living space. We answered both with a CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex roof in Weathered Wood paired with VELUX solar-powered venting skylights. It is a combination that pairs cold-weather durability with daylight and fresh air, and it was finished with the same one-day efficiency and 0% financing options Pinnacle brings to every project.

Scope of Work

We began with a complete tear-off to the deck, replacing any compromised sheathing before rebuilding the roof as a system: ice-and-water shield at the eaves, valleys, and around all penetrations, synthetic underlayment across the field, new drip edge, and starter strips at the perimeter. The NorthGate ClimateFlex shingles went down across the field, capped with matching ridge and balanced ventilation. We then cut, framed, and flashed the openings for the VELUX units and integrated them into the new roof plane, sealing each with proper step and head flashing so the skylights are as watertight as the roof around them.

What We Installed (And Why)

CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex is built for exactly this climate. Its shingles use a rubberized SBS-modified asphalt that stays flexible in the cold, so the roof resists the cracking and impact damage that ordinary shingles can suffer during a New England winter of freeze-thaw cycles and wind-driven ice. On an exposed hilltop lot in Foster, that cold-weather toughness is worth its weight, and the Max Def Weathered Wood color gives it a warm, natural, driftwood-brown blend that suits a country home.

The VELUX skylights are solar-powered venting units, meaning they open and close on their own using a built-in solar cell, drawing warm stale air up and out and letting daylight pour in without ever running a wire. Rain sensors close them automatically at the first drop, and because they are solar-powered they can qualify homeowners for federal tax credits. Set into a fresh, properly flashed roof, they add both light and passive ventilation to the home below.

Good To Know: Is it better to add skylights during a roof replacement?

Yes, and this Foster project is a good example of why. When skylights go in as part of a full re-roof, the openings are framed and flashed into a brand-new, continuous waterproofing layer rather than cut into an aging roof around them. That means the shingles, underlayment, and skylight flashing all tie together as one sealed system installed at the same time by the same crew. It is the single best moment to add daylight to a home, with the lowest risk of future leaks and no disturbance to a roof you would otherwise have to open back up later.

Why This Approach Works

A cold-flex shingle and a self-venting skylight solve two different problems that both come down to managing a New England attic. The NorthGate ClimateFlex shell keeps water and ice out and stays durable through deep-cold swings, while the solar-venting VELUX units actively exhaust heat and humidity that would otherwise build up under the roof. Together with balanced intake and exhaust ventilation, the result is a roof that is tougher on the outside and healthier on the inside, protecting the deck and improving comfort in the rooms below.

Why Pinnacle

This job needed two specialties, and Pinnacle carries the top credential for each. We are a CertainTeed ShingleMaster Premier contractor, the highest residential credential CertainTeed offers, and a VELUX 5-Star Skylight Specialist, so both the NorthGate roof and the solar-venting skylights were installed exactly to manufacturer spec by a certified pro. Serving Rhode Island since 2012, we hold RI Residential License #39446, a 5.0-star Google rating with 100+ five-star reviews, a BBB A+ rating, and NRCA and RIBA membership.

Foster, RI

Foster is Rhode Island’s western frontier, a rural town of rolling farmland, dense woods, and homes set well back on wooded acreage where winters run colder and snowier than the coast. Roofs here work hard against wind, ice, and shade-borne moisture, which makes cold-flexible shingles and good ventilation a smart pairing. We are glad to bring durable, daylight-friendly roofing to homeowners throughout Foster.
