This cottage at 1 Hammett Court in the downtown village of Jamestown needed a full roofing upgrade. Like many homes over 100 years old on the island, the wood deck underneath the shingles was spaced sheathing boards — an older construction method that doesn’t meet current building code or manufacturer specifications for modern shingle installation. Scope of Work

The crew stripped the existing shingles, inspected the spaced board sheathing, and installed new plywood decking over the old planks to create a solid, code-compliant surface. Many older homes — especially those built before the mid-20th century — have spaced board sheathing rather than solid plywood decking. The boards were nailed across the rafters with gaps between them, which was standard practice at the time. Modern asphalt shingles require a solid, continuous deck to perform correctly: the manufacturer’s warranty requires it, building codes require it, and the shingles themselves rely on full deck contact to resist wind uplift.
