This cottage at 1 Hammett Court in the downtown village of Jamestown needed a full roofing upgrade. Like many homes over 100 years old on the island, the wood deck underneath the shingles was spaced sheathing boards — an older construction method that doesn’t meet current building code or manufacturer specifications for modern shingle installation. Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights installed new plywood decking over the old planks, then completed the roof with Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration shingles in Harbor Blue.

Scope of Work

The crew stripped the existing shingles, inspected the spaced board sheathing, and installed new plywood decking over the old planks to create a solid, code-compliant surface. With the deck properly prepared, Pinnacle installed ice and water shield at eaves and penetrations, synthetic underlayment, new drip edge, starter strip, Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration shingles in Harbor Blue, and matching hip and ridge caps. The crew also refreshed the existing skylight during the project — cleaning, resealing, and ensuring proper flashing integration with the new roof system.

What We Installed (And Why)

Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration is a heavyweight architectural shingle built for performance in coastal New England conditions. The SureNail Technology strip provides a reinforced nailing zone that resists blow-offs in high winds — rated to 130 MPH — which matters on an island in the middle of Narragansett Bay. Harbor Blue is a rich, deep blue-toned color that complements Jamestown’s coastal village character without overpowering the cottage-scale architecture.

The TruDefinition color technology delivers enhanced color depth through a multi-tonal granule blend. Rather than a flat, single-tone appearance, the roof shows subtle color variation across the surface — blues, charcoals, and dark accents layered to create dimension. The algae-resistant granules help the roof maintain that appearance over time, preventing the dark streaking that’s common in humid coastal environments.

Good To Know

Many older homes — especially those built before the mid-20th century — have spaced board sheathing rather than solid plywood decking. The boards were nailed across the rafters with gaps between them, which was standard practice at the time. Modern asphalt shingles require a solid, continuous deck to perform correctly: the manufacturer’s warranty requires it, building codes require it, and the shingles themselves rely on full deck contact to resist wind uplift. Adding plywood over the existing boards brings the deck up to code without the cost and disruption of removing the original framing. It’s a standard upgrade on older homes throughout Rhode Island.

Why This Approach Works

A 100-year-old cottage deserves a roof system that respects the home’s character while delivering modern protection. The Owens Corning Duration shingle handles the performance side — 130 MPH wind rating, algae resistance, SureNail Technology — while Harbor Blue adds a color that fits the coastal village setting. Upgrading the deck ensures the entire system performs as intended, and refreshing the skylight during the same visit means no second trip and no missed details at a critical roof penetration.

Why Pinnacle

Pinnacle Roofing is an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, which means access to enhanced warranty coverage and verified installation standards on every Owens Corning project. Older homes with non-standard framing and deck conditions require experience — Pinnacle’s crew has seen spaced sheathing, skip sheathing, and every other variation that shows up when you strip a roof in Rhode Island. Whether it’s a downtown Jamestown cottage or a modern residential roof replacement, the approach stays the same: assess the deck, fix what needs fixing, and install the system right. With over 100 five-star Google reviews and an A+ BBB rating, our track record speaks for itself.

Jamestown, RI

Jamestown’s downtown village is a tight-knit collection of historic cottages, shops, and restaurants on Conanicut Island. Homes here are close together, many are well over a century old, and the island’s full coastal exposure — wind, salt air, and sun from every direction — demands roofing materials and installation practices that can handle the environment. Pinnacle has completed numerous roofing projects throughout Jamestown and understands both the architectural character and the weather challenges that define island construction.
