Bright white vinyl clapboard, black louvered shutters, a cheerful blue front door, and a front-gable dormer give this East Greenwich Cape the kind of classic New England look that only works when every element is crisp — and nothing dresses a home’s whole face like a fresh roof. Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights replaced the aging shingles with new Charcoal Black CertainTeed Landmark architectural shingles, a deep dark field that frames the white siding and brick chimney beautifully. Take a look at our other roofing projects around East Greenwich.
Scope of Work
We approached this Cape as a complete roof system rather than a shingle swap. The crew tore off the old roof down to the deck, inspected the sheathing, and replaced any boards that had gone soft. Then we rebuilt in the proper sequence: ice-and-water shield along the eaves and in the valleys, synthetic underlayment over the full field, new metal drip edge at the eaves and rakes, and fresh flashing at the brick chimney and the dormer walls. The Charcoal Black CertainTeed Landmark shingles were installed to spec and finished with matching ridge cap over a continuous ridge vent. See everything included in our Residential Roofing service.
What We Installed (And Why)
The star of the finished project is the Charcoal Black CertainTeed Landmark shingle. Landmark is a laminated architectural shingle, meaning it is built up in layers to create depth and shadow rather than the flat look of an old three-tab roof. The charcoal tone is a genuine crowd-pleaser on a white home — dark enough to define the roofline and shutters, neutral enough to never fight the siding. Its dimensional surface gives even the simple planes of a Cape a richer, more custom appearance.
The performance layers underneath are what make the roof last. Ice-and-water shield seals the eaves and valleys where wind-driven rain and ice dams try hardest to get in, and synthetic underlayment lays down a durable secondary barrier across the deck. The continuous ridge vent, paired with intake at the eaves, keeps air moving through the attic so heat and moisture escape instead of cooking the deck from below. It is a complete CertainTeed system engineered to work together, and you can read more about the CertainTeed shingle line here.

Good To Know: Will a charcoal-black roof make my home hotter?
It is a fair question, because dark surfaces do absorb more sunlight. In practice, the color of the shingle matters far less than the ventilation underneath it. A roof with balanced intake at the eaves and continuous exhaust at the ridge — like the system we installed here — lets hot air escape continuously, keeping attic temperatures in check regardless of shingle color. That is why we treat ventilation as part of every roof, not an add-on. You get the crisp look of charcoal black without giving up comfort or shortening the roof’s life.
Why This Approach Works
Roofs fail from the details, not the field. The wide, open planes of a Cape are the easy part; it is the eaves, the valleys, the chimney, and the dormer walls where water finds a way in when a job is rushed. By tearing off to the deck, sealing the vulnerable transitions with ice-and-water shield, flashing the chimney and dormer properly, and finishing with quality architectural shingles over a vented ridge, this roof is protected exactly where it counts. That is the difference between a roof that merely looks new and one that will still be doing its job decades from now.
