Like most Pinnacle projects, the work was completed efficiently — minimizing disruption for the property owner.
This project was handled through an insurance claim; Pinnacle documented everything and worked directly with the adjuster — see how our storm/insurance process works.
Rising three full stories over a busy Providence streetscape, this American Foursquare carries real presence — gray clapboard dressed with shutters, a hipped roof broken by a front-gable dormer, twin brick chimneys, and bay windows that catch the afternoon light. A home this tall is defined by its roofline, so when it came time to replace the aging roof, the owners chose a full tear-off finished in Charcoal Black CertainTeed Landmark shingles. Because storm damage was involved, the project was handled as an insurance claim from start to finish. See more of our roofing work throughout Providence.
Scope of Work
A tall Foursquare with hips, a dormer, and two chimneys is all about the transitions, and we treated every one of them as its own detail. Our crew stripped the old roof completely down to the wood deck, then inspected the sheathing and replaced anything soft or storm-worn. From there we built the system back up in the right order: ice-and-water shield at the eaves, in the valleys, and around the chimneys; synthetic underlayment across the field; new metal drip edge at the eaves and rakes; and fresh step flashing worked into the brick. Charcoal Black CertainTeed Landmark architectural shingles went on next, capped by matching ridge shingles over a continuous ridge vent. Learn more about our full Residential Roofing process.
What We Installed (And Why)
The finished roof is a full field of Charcoal Black CertainTeed Landmark shingles — a deep, dimensional charcoal that reads crisp against the gray clapboard and dark shutters. Landmark is a laminated architectural shingle built to shrug off wind and shed weather season after season, and on a three-story home its dimensional shadow lines give the tall roof planes real depth from the sidewalk. Around the twin brick chimneys, we set new step flashing so those vulnerable transitions stay watertight for the long haul.
Underneath the shingles is the part you never see but always benefit from. Ice-and-water shield seals the eaves, valleys, and chimney bases against wind-driven rain and ice dams, while synthetic underlayment adds a tough secondary barrier across the whole deck. A continuous ridge vent lets hot, moist attic air escape at the peak, which protects the deck and helps the shingles perform as designed. Every CertainTeed component works as one system — you can read more about the CertainTeed shingle line we install.

Good To Know: How does the insurance claim process work for a storm-damaged roof?
When a roof is damaged by a storm, the repair or replacement is often covered by your homeowner’s policy — but the outcome depends heavily on how the damage is documented. Pinnacle photographs and records the damage in detail, meets the adjuster on site, and speaks the same technical language so nothing legitimate gets overlooked. We handle the back-and-forth so you are not left translating between an insurer and a contractor. The goal is simple: a proper, code-correct roof restored to like-new condition, with the claim handled the right way.
Why This Approach Works
A roof only keeps water out if the layers underneath the shingles are right, and that is doubly true on a tall home with hips, a dormer, and masonry chimneys where slopes and materials meet. Tearing off to the deck let us see and fix what a layover would have hidden. Sealing the eaves, valleys, and chimney bases before the shingles ever went down means the roof is protected at exactly the spots where leaks start. Pairing quality architectural shingles with balanced ridge ventilation protects both the roof you see and the deck you don’t — which is how a new roof earns its full service life instead of aging out early.
Why Pinnacle

Providence, RI
Providence is a city of tall, historic homes — Foursquares, Victorians, and triple-deckers packed along tight, tree-lined streets where every roofline is on full display. Those steep, complex roofs take a beating from coastal storms and heavy snow, and they demand a contractor who respects both the architecture and the weather. Pinnacle is proud to serve homeowners across Providence with roofing built for the capital city’s older housing stock.
