Two front-facing gabled dormers, a full-width covered porch with a turned railing, and a brick chimney give this Richmond Cape a warm, storybook character — the kind of home that calls for a roof with texture and warmth rather than a flat, uniform color. Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights delivered exactly that with a full replacement in Resawn Shake CertainTeed Landmark shingles, a variegated tan-brown wood-look blend that suits the home’s classic lines. Scope of Work
We built this roof as a complete system from the deck up. The crew tore off the old shingles, inspected the sheathing, and replaced any boards that had softened over the years. Then we layered it back correctly: ice-and-water shield along the eaves and in the valleys, synthetic underlayment across the field, new metal drip edge at the eaves and rakes, and fresh flashing where the dormers and brick chimney meet the roof. The Resawn Shake CertainTeed Landmark shingles were installed to spec, blending their color range across the planes, and finished with matching ridge cap over continuous ridge ventilation. What We Installed (And Why)
The character of this roof comes from the Resawn Shake CertainTeed Landmark shingle — a warm, variegated tan-brown blend designed to mimic the look of natural wood shake without any of the maintenance real cedar demands. Landmark is a laminated architectural shingle, so it carries genuine dimensional depth, and the Resawn Shake color range shifts subtly across the field the way weathered wood does. On a Cape with dormers and a covered porch, that texture reads as timeless rather than trendy.
Beneath the shingles, the system is built to protect. Ice-and-water shield seals the eaves and valleys against wind-driven rain and ice dams, and synthetic underlayment lays a durable secondary barrier over the entire deck. The dormers and brick chimney were flashed properly so those transitions stay watertight, and continuous ridge ventilation keeps the attic breathing so heat and moisture escape rather than building up. It is a complete CertainTeed system, and you can read more about the CertainTeed shingle line we install.

Good To Know: Can I get the look of cedar shake without the upkeep?
Yes — and that is exactly what a shingle like Resawn Shake is made for. Real cedar shake is beautiful but demanding: it needs periodic treatment, can split and curl, and is vulnerable to rot and moss over time. A wood-look architectural shingle captures the warm, variegated character of shake in a laminated asphalt shingle that resists wind and weather and never needs staining or sealing. You get the charm of natural wood with the durability and low maintenance of a modern roof — the best of both worlds.
Why This Approach Works
A roof earns its lifespan below the shingles as much as above them. On a home with two dormers and a chimney, the transitions where those features meet the roof are the leak-prone points, so sealing the eaves and valleys and flashing the dormers and chimney correctly is what keeps water out for the long haul. Tearing off to the deck let us catch and fix anything hidden before it became a problem. Combining a quality architectural shingle with proper ridge ventilation protects both the roof you admire from the street and the deck you never see — which is how a roof reaches its full service life.
