A Central Street homeowner in Burrillville called Pinnacle after noticing the exterior of their contemporary home had started to break down, with soft, weathered areas showing up at the corners and around a deck post, and asked us to replace the failing siding before the damage spread any further.

Scope of Work

The team began with a full walk-around to map out where the existing cladding had failed, then set up protection for the grounds and removed the old siding down to the sheathing. That tear-off exposed the rot at the corners and near the deck post, letting the crew cut out and rebuild the compromised areas so the new exterior would sit on a sound, dry substrate. Next came a fresh weather-resistive barrier, careful flashing at every window, door, and penetration, and then the new cladding installed level and true across each elevation. Trim and corner details were fitted last for a clean, finished look. The full siding replacement was sequenced to keep the home protected the whole way through.

What We Installed (And Why)

This home received all-new exterior siding across the affected elevations, along with new trim, corner detail, and a continuous weather barrier behind the cladding. The rotted framing and sheathing that had been hiding behind the old material were repaired first, because covering damaged wood with new siding only buries the problem instead of solving it. With the substrate rebuilt and a proper drainage plane in place, water now sheds away from the wall the way it should.

The flashing details are where a siding job is won or lost. We integrated the weather barrier and flashing so that any moisture reaching the wall is directed back out and down, rather than allowed to collect at corners and posts where the previous rot took hold. That combination of sound framing, a modern weather barrier, and tight trim work is what gives the new exterior its longevity.

Good To Know: Why does siding rot at the corners and around deck posts first?

Those spots are the exterior’s weak points. Corners and the areas where a deck ledger or post meets the wall are where water tends to concentrate, and if the original flashing or caulk fails, moisture gets behind the siding and lingers against the wood. Over time that constant dampness leads to soft, punky rot that spreads outward from the joint. That is why we do not just skin over the old material. We open those areas up, replace anything compromised, and re-flash the connections so the new siding is not fighting a losing battle against trapped water from day one.

Why This Approach Works

Replacing siding the right way means treating the wall as a system. Tearing off the failed cladding revealed exactly where the damage was, so the crew could rebuild the framing and sheathing before anything new went up. Adding a fresh weather barrier and re-flashing every opening and connection gives the wall a drainage path, so water that gets past the surface is escorted back out instead of soaking into the structure. Level installation and carefully fitted trim finish the job both visually and functionally, leaving a durable, weather-tight exterior that will not repeat the corner rot that started this project.
