A homeowner on Acacia Court in Coventry wanted to bring natural light into a cathedral-ceiling living space, and a new deck-mounted skylight was the perfect way to do it. Set into a soaring, open ceiling, a well-installed skylight transforms a room — flooding it with daylight while keeping the roof completely watertight.

Scope of Work

Our crew carefully laid out and cut the roof opening to fit the new unit, framing the rough opening cleanly and setting the skylight on a proper mounting. We wrapped the opening with ice-and-water shield to seal it against wind-driven rain and snowmelt, then installed the flashing kit in the correct sequence with the surrounding shingles so water is directed over and around the unit rather than into it. Inside, the light well was finished to carry daylight down through the cathedral ceiling. Explore more of what we do on our Skylights page.

What We Installed (And Why)

The home received a new deck-mounted skylight set into the pitched, asphalt-shingled roof over the cathedral ceiling. Deck-mounted units sit low and sleek against the roofline, and when they are flashed correctly they are exceptionally weathertight. The critical work is invisible from the ground: an ice-and-water membrane wrapped around the entire opening and a step-by-step flashing kit woven into the surrounding shingles, so every layer sheds water to the one below it.

That layered, water-shedding detail is what separates a skylight that performs for decades from one that leaks. Rather than relying on sealant to do the job, our crew builds a proper flashing system that manages water the same way the rest of the roof does. The finished result gives the cathedral-ceiling room an abundant source of natural daylight without any compromise to the integrity of the roof above it. In a tall, open space like this one, that overhead light changes how the whole room feels — brighter through the day, more comfortable to live in, and connected to the sky in a way a wall window simply cannot match.

Good To Know: Do skylights leak?

A skylight leaks only when it is installed poorly — and that is exactly the problem proper technique prevents. The vast majority of skylight leaks trace back to shortcut flashing or a reliance on caulk instead of a real water-management system. When the opening is wrapped in ice-and-water shield and the flashing kit is layered correctly into the surrounding shingles, the skylight sheds water just like the roof around it. Done right, a modern skylight is a durable, weathertight feature — not a liability. The reassurance for a homeowner is simple: the same layered water management that protects the rest of the roof is protecting the opening around the skylight too.

Why This Approach Works

A roof keeps water out through layering: every course overlaps the one beneath it so water always flows downhill and outward. A skylight has to join that system seamlessly, and that is precisely what a properly sequenced flashing kit and a fully wrapped, ice-and-water-protected opening accomplish. By integrating the unit into the roof’s natural water-shedding path rather than patching around it, the installation stays watertight through heavy rain, wind, and the freeze-thaw cycles of a Rhode Island winter — all while delivering the daylight the homeowner wanted. It is the kind of detail work that never draws attention, precisely because it keeps doing its job year after year.
