On Maxfield Avenue in East Providence, a large, multi-gabled home with striking, steep rooflines needed its dome skylight brought back to a fully weather-tight condition — so the crew stripped the old detail and re-flashed the unit cleanly into the surrounding roof.
Scope of Work
Work centered on the existing dome skylight and the curb it sits on. The crew removed the old, tired flashing, inspected the curb and the deck around the opening for any soft or compromised material, and rebuilt the waterproofing from the substrate up. Self-adhered ice-and-water membrane was wrapped around the full perimeter of the opening, then new metal flashing was formed and layered so the base, sides, and head each lap correctly over the course below — the head-flashing tucked up under the roofing above, the apron shedding out over it. Sealant was reserved as a backup to mechanical laps, never a substitute. Explore our Skylights service to see how these curb-mounted details are handled.
What We Installed (And Why)
The finished detail is a cleanly re-flashed dome skylight — a curb-mounted unit whose raised frame is the key to keeping it dry. On a curb-mounted skylight, the dome sits on a built-up curb above the roof plane, and every drop of water is managed by the flashing that wraps that curb. By stripping the old flashing back and starting from a continuous ice-and-water wrap, the crew eliminated the weak seams and aged sealant that let water find its way in on an older detail.
New metal flashing was then formed to the curb and stepped into the surrounding roof so the laps run in the direction water travels — over, never against. This matters even more on a large multi-gable roof, where valleys and changing planes concentrate runoff toward details like this one. The rebuilt flashing gives the dome a clean, integrated collar that moves water past the opening and back onto the field, keeping the daylight above without the drips below.

Good To Know: Can a leaking skylight be re-flashed instead of fully replaced?
Very often, yes. Most skylight leaks trace to failed flashing or dried-out sealant around the curb, not to the dome or glass itself — so if the unit is sound and the curb is solid, re-flashing restores a watertight seal without the cost and disruption of a full replacement. The important part is doing it properly: stripping the old detail back to a clean surface, wrapping the opening in ice-and-water membrane, and forming new metal flashing that laps correctly, rather than smearing fresh caulk over an old problem.
Why This Approach Works
A skylight is only as good as the collar of flashing around it. Rebuilding that collar from a continuous ice-and-water wrap and properly lapped metal — instead of patching the surface — addresses the actual path water takes, which is why it lasts. On a big multi-gable roof that funnels runoff toward the skylight curb, that layered, water-shedding detail is what turns a recurring leak into a permanent fix. Keeping the existing dome and rebuilding only the flashing also preserves the character of the roof while solving the underlying problem.

East Providence, RI
East Providence is a dense, characterful city on the east bank of the Seekonk and Providence rivers, with a housing stock that runs from classic multi-gable homes to newer builds. Roofs here take on wind off the water and the full swing of New England seasons, so details like skylight flashing have to be done right the first time. On homes with the kind of complex, multi-gable roofs common in the city, that attention to detail is exactly what keeps interiors dry. We are glad to serve homeowners across East Providence with roofing and skylight expertise.
