Narragansett, RI Skylight Installation Brings Daylight Into the Home

A home on Spice Bush Trail in Narragansett wanted more natural light without giving up privacy or wall space — and the answer came from above. As part of the project, the homeowner added a skylight that turns a dim interior into a bright, sunlit room while the roof around it stays completely weather-tight.

Scope of Work

A skylight is only as good as the hole it sits in, so the crew treated the opening like the critical detail it is. The team laid out and cut the roof opening precisely, framed and prepped the curb, then set the skylight unit into a proper curb-and-flashing kit engineered for the roof. Ice-and-water shield was wrapped around the entire opening to seal the most vulnerable seam on the roof, and the manufacturer’s step-flashing sequence was woven into the surrounding shingles so water sheds around the unit instead of pooling against it. Inside, the light well was finished to carry daylight cleanly down into the room. It is the kind of precise work our Skylights team is built for.

What We Installed (And Why)

The finished result is a deck-mounted skylight set into the roof with a full curb-and-flashing kit and ice-and-water wrap around the opening. That layered approach is what separates a skylight that stays dry for decades from one that becomes a chronic leak. The flashing kit channels water around and past the unit, while the ice-and-water membrane seals directly to the roof deck as a fail-safe barrier — critical protection where wind-driven rain and winter ice-dams put the most pressure on a roof.

Beyond keeping water out, the payoff is what the homeowner sees every day. The interior photos show natural light pouring through the new skylight, brightening a space that used to depend on lamps and opening up the room without touching a single wall. Daylight from overhead is softer and more even than light from a window, and it shifts naturally through the day, cutting down on the need for lamps and lending the room a more open, comfortable feel. Overhead glazing also draws the eye upward, making a modest space feel larger without any change to the footprint. The clean flashing detail on the finished roof shows the unit sitting flush and tight in the shingle field, exactly as it should.

Good To Know: Won’t a skylight eventually leak?

A properly installed skylight should not — and installation is everything. Most skylight leaks trace back to shortcuts in the flashing, not the unit itself. When the opening is wrapped in ice-and-water shield and the skylight is set with the correct curb-and-flashing kit woven into the surrounding roof, water is directed around the unit and can’t find a way in. The difference between a leaky skylight and a dry one is almost always the quality of the detail work around it.

Why This Approach Works

Cutting a hole in a roof is only a problem if you don’t seal it correctly. By treating the opening as a system — precise framing, a matched flashing kit, and a continuous ice-and-water barrier — the skylight becomes a permanent, watertight part of the roof rather than a weak point in it. The homeowner gets years of free natural light and better daytime comfort, with none of the leak worries that give skylights an undeserved reputation.
