A homeowner on Centracchio Street in West Warwick wanted more than a fresh roof — they wanted daylight. As part of a full re-roof, Pinnacle set new deck-mounted skylights into the finished slope, turning a routine roof replacement into a chance to flood the rooms below with natural light while keeping the roof completely watertight.
Scope of Work
Because the skylights were installed during a re-roof, the crew was able to integrate them into the new roof system from the deck up rather than retrofitting around existing shingles. After the old roofing was removed and the deck inspected, the openings were framed and prepped, and each skylight was set into the deck with its curb and manufacturer flashing kit. The team wrapped the openings in ice-and-water shield, layered underlayment and step-flashing so water is directed over the units and away from the frames, and finished the surrounding field so the skylights sit flush and clean. See how we approach daylighting on our Skylights page.
What We Installed (And Why)
The centerpiece is a set of deck-mounted skylights installed as part of the new roof rather than cut into an old one. Deck-mounted units sit low and tight to the roof plane, which gives a clean exterior line and a well-integrated flashing detail. Installing them during a re-roof is the ideal moment: the deck is exposed, the framing can be prepared correctly, and the flashing and waterproofing become part of the roof system instead of an afterthought layered over existing shingles.
Around each opening, the crew wrapped ice-and-water shield and stepped the flashing so the roof sheds water over and around the units the same way it does over a chimney or wall. That layered, water-managed detail is what separates a skylight that lasts from one that eventually weeps at the corners. Inside, the payoff is immediate — a bright, daylit room with a light well that carries the sun deep into the space below.

Good To Know: Is a re-roof the best time to add skylights?
Yes. When the roof is already being replaced, the deck is open and the entire waterproofing system is being rebuilt anyway, so adding skylights adds far less labor than a standalone retrofit — and the flashing gets integrated into the new roof from the start. That means a cleaner install, a lower relative cost, and the confidence that the openings are sealed as part of a single continuous roof system rather than patched into an aging one.
Why This Approach Works
A skylight is only as good as the flashing around it. By setting deck-mounted units into a brand-new roof and wrapping every opening in ice-and-water shield before layering the flashing, Pinnacle built the waterproofing into the roof rather than relying on sealant to hold the line. Because the work happened while the deck was already exposed, there was no cutting into a finished roof and no compromise to the surrounding shingles — the openings were framed, prepped, and integrated as the new roof went on. The units sit flush and low for a crisp exterior look, while the interior light wells do the real work — pulling free, natural daylight into rooms that used to depend on lamps. It is a detail-driven approach that adds comfort and brightness without adding risk, and it is exactly how a skylight should be installed to last.
