The skylights were set into a fully re-decked, re-underlaid roof and flashed with VELUX’s engineered kits, then finished on the interior so clean daylight carries all the way down into the living space. Scope of Work

We installed VELUX Skylights on this project. Because the skylights went in with a full roof replacement, we were able to build the waterproofing around them from the deck up instead of retrofitting into finished shingles. The roof was stripped to the sheathing and inspected, then WinterGuard ice-and-water shield was run along the eaves and valleys and lapped up the skylight curb faces to create a continuous membrane from the deck to the frame of each unit. As the field was shingled, every course of Landmark PRO was woven into the VELUX flashing kit on the way up the roof — apron flashing at the bottom, step flashing interlaced with each shingle row along the sides, and head flashing tucked under the course above. The interior shafts were then finished to carry the light cleanly into the rooms below. Integrating the glass into the roof this way, rather than sealing around it after the fact, is the single biggest reason a skylight stays dry for the life of the roof.

What We Installed (And Why)

The reputation skylights carry for leaking almost always traces back to how they were installed, not the units themselves — and that is exactly what a genuine VELUX installation is built to solve. VELUX skylights are sold as No Leak Skylights because each unit ships with an engineered flashing kit matched to the roof covering, and it is that factory flashing, woven into the shingles, that does the waterproofing. The glass itself is a sealed, insulated unit with a low-E coating that lets daylight in while cutting the summer heat gain and winter heat loss of ordinary glass. On this home we used fixed skylights, which have no motors or moving seals to maintain and are the simplest, most reliable way to add a wash of daylight to a cathedral ceiling or a dim upper hallway. Where a full skylight will not fit — an interior bath or a closet with no direct roof access — VELUX sun tunnels are the companion solution, channeling daylight down a reflective tube from a small roof dome.
