Jamestown Coastal Storm Damage Roof Restoration in Colonial Slate

Like most Pinnacle projects, the work was completed efficiently — minimizing disruption for the property owner.

This project was handled through an insurance claim; Pinnacle documented everything and worked directly with the adjuster — see how our storm/insurance process works.

Sitting on the island between the bays, this two-story Jamestown Cape catches wind from every direction, and its arched-window front dormer, columned front porch, attached two-car garage, and rooftop cupola with weathervane make it a landmark on its street. That same exposure is what left the roof vulnerable when a coastal storm rolled through and stripped and lifted shingles across the field. Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights restored the roof in blended-gray Colonial Slate CertainTeed Landmark shingles and managed the insurance claim from start to finish. Take a look at our Jamestown roofing work to see how we build for the island’s conditions.

Scope of Work

Coastal storm damage can be deceptive, so we began with a detailed inspection and full photo documentation of the lifted, creased, and missing shingles across every plane and around the cupola. We dried the exposed areas in to stop water intrusion while the claim was underway, then met the adjuster on site and walked through the damage so the scope was accurate. Once approved, the crew tore the old roof off to the deck, replaced any wind-loosened sheathing, and installed ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys with synthetic underlayment over the full roof. New drip edge, flashing, and the Colonial Slate shingles completed the field, finished with ridge ventilation. Our Storm Damage Restoration service is built for exactly these coastal claims.

What We Installed (And Why)

The new roof is Colonial Slate by CertainTeed Landmark, a blended-gray architectural shingle whose slate-like tone suits the home’s Cape lines and coastal setting. Beyond appearance, Landmark shingles are engineered to stand up to high winds, which matters on an exposed island lot where the next storm is never far off.

What protects a coastal roof is the system beneath the shingles. Ice-and-water shield seals the eaves and valleys against wind-driven rain, the direction water attacks hardest near the water, and full synthetic underlayment adds a continuous water-shedding layer across the deck. Flashing was renewed at the dormer, cupola, and other roof penetrations where salt air and storms find the weak points, and balanced ridge ventilation was set to help the roof shed the heat and moisture that shorten shingle life. On an island home that faces open water, those details are the difference between a roof that lasts and one that fails at its first hard blow.

Good To Know: Does coastal wind damage need to be handled differently in a claim?

The claim process is the same, but the documentation has to be sharper. Coastal wind often lifts and creases shingles without tearing them cleanly off, so the damage is easy to overlook from the ground. We inspect closely and photograph those subtle failures, because a shingle that has been broken loose from its seal will keep leaking even if it looks intact. Presenting that evidence clearly to the adjuster is what makes sure the full extent of an island storm’s damage is recognized.

Why This Approach Works

An exposed coastal roof lives or dies on its edges and seals, so a proper restoration focuses there. A complete tear-off lets us seal the eaves and valleys, renew every flashing point, and lock in wind-rated shingles across a sound deck, rather than patching around damage that a coastal storm has already spread wider than it appears. Combined with careful claim documentation, that gives the homeowner a roof built for the island and a fair process to fund it.

Why Pinnacle

Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights has worked across Rhode Island’s coastal towns since 2012, and as a CertainTeed ShingleMaster Premier contractor we install CertainTeed Landmark roofs to the manufacturer’s highest standard, which matters on wind-exposed homes like this one. We are Rhode Island licensed, hold a BBB A+ rating, and have earned more than 100 five-star Google reviews. On storm claims, we document the damage and deal with the adjuster alongside you, so the process stays clear from the first inspection to the finished roof.

Jamestown, RI

Jamestown sits on Conanicut Island between Narragansett Bay’s east and west passages, where homes face open water and take the full force of coastal wind. Roofs here have to be built and restored with that exposure in mind, using proper sealing and wind-rated materials rather than shortcuts. See how we serve the island on our Jamestown roofing services page.
