This contemporary home in East Greenwich was built for light — cathedral ceilings, big glass, and a roof plane made for skylights. Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights installed VELUX fixed skylights with solar-powered blinds, flashing each one into the home’s CertainTeed Resawn Shake roof so the finished field looks factory-made.
Scope of Work
The crew set four VELUX fixed skylights across the main roof plane, each with VELUX’s engineered flashing kit woven into the surrounding Resawn Shake shingles course by course. Solar-powered blinds went in with each unit — no wiring required — and the interior returns were finished clean to the cathedral ceiling.
What We Installed (And Why)
VELUX fixed skylights carry the company’s No Leak installation system — engineered deck seal, underlayment collar, and step flashing designed as one assembly. Solar-powered blinds charge themselves and run from a remote, letting the homeowners tune the light without touching a ladder; solar-powered VELUX products may also qualify for a federal tax credit.
The roof’s Resawn Shake color — CertainTeed’s rough-sawn wood look in warm browns — gives the skylights a rich field to sit in. Dark anodized frames against shake-toned shingles is one of the best-looking pairings in residential roofing, and on a contemporary home it looks intentional rather than added-on.

Good To Know: Do skylights leak?
Old ones did — which is why the question survives. Modern VELUX units installed with the full flashing system essentially closed that chapter: the deck seal, collar, and step flashing shed water the same way the shingles do, layer over layer, with no reliance on sealant alone. When you hear about a leaking skylight today, the story is almost always an aging unit, a missing flashing component, or an installer who improvised. Certified installation is the whole ballgame.
Why This Approach Works
A skylight is a hole in your roof — the discipline is in making it a engineered one. Factory flashing kits, correct underlayment integration, and finished interior returns turn a risky penetration into a permanent feature that adds light, value, and ventilation-free solar control.
