Natural light transformed this Jamestown interior. VELUX skylights bring daylight deep into the home where it makes the biggest difference—turning a dark room into a comfortable, inviting space. As Rhode Island’s only VELUX 5-Star Skylight Specialist, Pinnacle Roofing & Skylights brings manufacturer-level expertise to every skylight installation, from proper framing to watertight flashing integration.
Scope of Work
This Jamestown skylight project required careful coordination between the roof system and the glass unit. We started by verifying the framing layout, then reinforced headers and trimmers to carry the skylight’s weight and wind load. The roof opening was cut to exact dimensions, and we installed a full perimeter of ice and water shield before setting the VELUX flashing components in their proper sequence—step flashing at the sides, saddle flashing at the top, and apron at the base. The skylight was seated, sealed, and connected to interior trim work that creates a finished shaft from roof to ceiling. Every detail matters when you are cutting a hole in a roof, and we treat the flashing integration as the most critical part of the process—especially on Jamestown roofs that face island — extreme bay wind and salt conditions. The Roofing System
For this Jamestown project, we installed VELUX as part of a complete roof system designed for long-term performance. VELUX delivers sun tunnel options bringing daylight into hallways and interior spaces along with the No Leak Warranty available only through certified 5-Star specialists—features that matter for Rhode Island homes facing coastal weather conditions. We built the system from the deck up: protective layers at vulnerable areas, quality underlayment, proper starter course, field shingles to manufacturer specifications, and ridge components that complete the weather barrier. See our VELUX gallery for completed projects, or review manufacturer specifications.
Good To Know
On this Jamestown project near Fort Wetherill, proper flashing is everything when it comes to skylights—water always takes the path of least resistance, and a skylight sitting in the middle of a roof slope creates a natural obstacle that water must flow around. VELUX engineered flashing kits are designed specifically for this job, with step flashing at the sides, a saddle at the top, and an apron at the base that together channel water cleanly around the unit. Field-fabricated flashing made from generic sheet metal is the number-one cause of skylight leaks, which is why we only use manufacturer-engineered systems installed exactly as designed.
Why This Approach Works
Proper framing reinforcement before cutting the opening is what prevents sagging, settling, and cracking over time. On this Jamestown skylight, we reinforced headers and trimmers to carry both the unit’s weight and the wind loads it will experience, then trimmed the opening to exact VELUX specifications before any glass went in. The structural work is invisible once the skylight is installed, but it determines whether the unit performs cleanly for decades or develops issues that compromise both the roof and the interior.
